Turn Excel, CSV, and XML files into automated business transactions
Exchange purchase orders, invoices, shipment data, and other business documents—even when a partner cannot support traditional EDI. Cleo Integration Cloud securely moves, validates, translates, and routes non-EDI file formats between your partners and business systems.
Built for partner workflows using XLSX, XLS, CSV, or XML over email alternatives, SFTP, AS2, and other supported connection methods.
Your partner may not support EDI. Your process can still be automated.
A spreadsheet or XML file can carry the same business information as a standard EDI document. The challenge is getting that data into the right system accurately, securely, and without repetitive manual work.
- Orders arrive as email attachments and wait in an inbox.
- Teams rekey header, line-item, ship-to, quantity, and pricing data.
- Spreadsheet columns and XML structures vary from partner to partner.
- Missing or invalid fields are discovered late in the process.
- Transaction status is difficult to trace across email and shared folders.
- Files are collected through secure, repeatable connections.
- Excel, CSV, and XML data is mapped to the target application format.
- Required fields and business rules are validated before delivery.
- Transactions are routed automatically to your ERP or downstream system.
- Teams gain centralized visibility into processing and exceptions.
Support the formats your partners actually use
Cleo helps businesses work with structured, non-EDI formats while preserving the business meaning of purchase orders, invoices, shipping notices, inventory feeds, and other transactions.
Excel EDI Integration
Accept partner spreadsheets in XLSX or XLS format, map worksheets and columns, validate required values, and transform the data for downstream systems.
CSV File Integration
Automate delimited flat-file transactions with partner-specific layouts, field mapping, data validation, and routing.
XML EDI Integration
Process structured XML business documents, translate partner schemas, and connect data to your ERP, warehouse, or order-management workflows.
Bridge to Standard EDI
Translate non-EDI files into the format required by another system or trading partner, including standard EDI where the workflow calls for it.
From file transfer to business-ready data
CIC brings file movement, transformation, orchestration, and visibility together so non-EDI partner transactions can operate as part of a managed integration flow.
Secure File Transfer
Exchange partner files through supported protocols such as SFTP and AS2 instead of relying on unmanaged email attachments.
Data Translation
Map XLSX, XLS, CSV, or XML structures into the data model required by your ERP, application, partner, or EDI workflow.

Check required values, data types, partner rules, and document structure before a transaction reaches the destination.
Routing & Orchestration
Direct translated data to the correct system and coordinate the steps required to complete the end-to-end business process.
Transaction Visibility
Monitor processing, identify exceptions, and investigate errors without piecing together activity from individual inboxes.
Partner-Specific Flexibility
Support different file layouts and connection methods while maintaining a consistent integration pattern behind the scenes.
Automate partner data exchange in four steps
Cleo turns partner-friendly files into controlled, repeatable integration flows.

Collect the XLSX, XLS, CSV, or XML file through the agreed connection method, such as SFTP or AS2.
Validate
Confirm the structure and required business data, including order numbers, items, quantities, addresses, and dates.
Translate
Transform the partner's file layout into the format your ERP, application, or receiving partner expects.
Route & Monitor
Deliver the transaction, track its status, and surface exceptions for faster resolution.
Common questions about non-EDI data exchange
Is Excel considered EDI?
No. Excel files such as XLSX and XLS do not follow standards like ANSI X12 or EDIFACT. However, a spreadsheet can contain the same business information as an EDI transaction and can be integrated through mapping, validation, and translation.
What does “XML EDI” mean?
XML EDI commonly refers to exchanging business-document data in XML rather than a traditional EDI syntax. The XML schema may be industry-defined or partner-specific and still requires mapping to the systems involved.
Can an Excel file represent an EDI 850 purchase order?
Yes. An Excel file can contain the purchase-order header, line items, ship-to details, quantities, pricing, and other information normally carried by an X12 850, even though the file itself is not an 850-standard EDI document.
Can Cleo automate emailed spreadsheets?
CIC is designed to support managed file movement and translation. For a production workflow, Cleo can use secure, repeatable connection methods such as SFTP or AS2 so the process does not depend on manual inbox handling.
Can Cleo convert Excel, CSV, or XML into EDI?
Yes. CIC can map and translate supported non-EDI file structures into a format required by the destination workflow, including standard EDI when appropriate.
Does the Cleo portal support non-EDI file translation?
No. This use case is supported through Cleo Integration Cloud, not through the portal offering.
