What is an 861 Receiving Advice/Acceptance Certificate?

The EDI 861 Receiving Advice/Acceptance Certificate file format is used to report the receipt of shipments or also as an official acceptance of returned and/or defective items. Often, the sender transmits an EDI 861 to report to the purchaser that the shipment was received. 

How is an 861 Receiving Advice/Acceptance Certificate used?

The EDI 861 Receiving Advice/Acceptance Certificate communicates confirmation of a received shipment. After the 861 is received, am EDI 997 (Functional Acknowledgement) is sent back from the shipping partner to indicate that the EDI 861 was successfully received.
