EDI 211: Motor Carrier Bill of Lading

What is an EDI 211: Motor Carrier Bill of Lading?
An EDI 211: Motor Carrier Bill of Lading allows shippers or any other organization responsible for contracting with a motor carrier, to provide a legal bill of lading for a shipment. An EDI 211 is to be considered an exact depiction of a shipment as agreed to by each of the trading partners.

 

How is an EDI 211: Motor Carrier Bill of Lading used?
An EDI 211: Motor Carrier Bill of Lading is used to allow shippers to provide a legal bill of lading for a shipment. An EDI 211 is not to be used to provide a motor carrier with data relative to a load tender, pickup manifest, or appointment scheduling.

EDI 211 Format

The EDI 211, a legal document for shipping communication, has important parts in a Motor Carrier Bill of Lading. These parts are:

Shipment ID number
Contact details for the shipper, carrier, and receivers
Ship-to location address
Product details like quantity, size, and weight
Load info, such as pallet count, total weight, and freight class
Expected delivery date
Any special instructions for shipping or handling

This X12 Transaction Set contains the format and establishes the data contents of the Motor Carrier Bill of Lading Transaction Set (211) for use within the context of an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) environment. This transaction set can be used to allow shippers or other parties, responsible for contracting with a motor carrier, to provide a legal bill of lading for a shipment. It is not to be used to provide a motor carrier with data relative to a load tender, pickup manifest, or appointment scheduling.
