Secure File Transfer Protocols
One of the most common Secure File Transfer Protocols is FTP/S. Most people are familiar with FTP as a common standard used to transfer files over the Internet. FTP is a popular method used to download programs and files from a server to a local computer. Secure File Transfer Protocol uses FTP combined with SSL to alter the message format and add security.
SSH File transfer protocol, or SSH FTP, is a file transfer protocol which uses SSH (secure shell) to provide the necessary security. SSH FTP provides secure file transfer and manipulation functionality over any reliable data stream. It is typically used with version two of the SSH protocol. Cleo's SSH secure file transfer software supports both SSH2 secure file transfer client and server.
Other protocols have been developed to address security issues with FTP/S
- AS2 offers increased verification and security achieved through the use of receipts and digital signatures. Secure file transfers and acknowledgements over AS2 occur in real-time, increasing the efficiency of document exchanges.
- ebMS offers similar security features yet retains the unique benefits of ebXML in the communications process. It allows companies using ebXML to utilize the intelligent headers that are supported in ebXML
- AS3 is useful in FTP centric environments. Its advantages over Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) are in the use of receipts, or Message Disposition Notifications (MDNs). MDNs provide a legal way to verify receipt of a message. The sender can request a digital signature along with the receipt, ensuring the identity of the recipient. The combination of an MDN and digital signature provides a high level of security and verification known as “non-repudiation.” This is the same level of security and reliability provided in AS2. It is important to note that AS3 is not an extension or the next level of AS2, but a separate standard. AS2 uses HTTP/S, and AS3 is built on FTP/S.
