AS2: A Data Exchange Standard
AS2 is a standard by which users transfer EDI or other data – such as Extensible Marking Language (XML) or plain text documents – over the Internet using the HTTP or HTTPs protocol.
AS2, or Applicability Statement 2, offers distinct advantages over HTTP, including increased verification and security achieved through the use of receipts, digital signatures, and file encryption. Its transactions and acknowledgements occur in real-time, increasing the efficiency of document exchanges.
Early adopters demonstrated that VAN bills could be reduced and near real-time EDI communications could be achieved using AS2. Walmart adopted the technology and began the move to AS2 in September of 2002. Since then, the number of Retail chains and Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) companies adopting AS2 as a method for communicating EDI data with vendors has continued to grow.
Other vertical industry markets have taken notice of the success enjoyed by the Retail and CPG marketplace including the healthcare supply chain, high-tech electronics manufacturing and distribution, plus a growing number of financial institutions.
